On Shoot With Sara Gadd Millinery
A couple of weeks ago I was asked to do the makeup for Sara Gadd Millinery’s latest photo shoot to showcase her new spring/summer and autumn/winter collection and update her website, which looks amazing!
Check it out at www.saragadd.co.uk
Sara has been making hats for over 15 years now and has been known as the mad hatter. When she turned up with her car overflowing with boxes of hats (and I mean overflowing) I totally understood why. She creates the most beautiful hats and headwear to suit all occasions, including bridal, so when she asked me if I would be interested in doing the makeup for her shoot, how could I say no?
The makeup needed to complement the looks and seasons of the hats Sara had made. I instantly wanted to go with bold lips to really work with the hats and complete the finished looks. The season and the model determined which particular shade of lipstick I used.
I had three beautiful models, one of whom, Sarah Stewart, I have now worked with various times. Sarah is very young with absolutely perfect skin, striking bone structure in her face and the most amazing eyes. Sarah was chosen to model the bridal looks and I decided that as she was the only ‘bride’ on this shoot I was going to keep the makeup a traditional yet striking bridal look.
Next was Simone Wrightson. Simone was the oldest of the models (yet somehow looked the same age) and is very naturally pretty and striking on camera. Simone has a fair skin tone and dark hair so I just had to add a bright pink lip followed by a classic red lip, keeping the eyes to a natural brown glamorous smoke. Simone is someone who I would love to work with again.
Then there was Jade Hodgson. As soon as I saw Jade I knew she was going to suit any lip colour I put on her. I really wanted to create the very popular rose gold eye on her and I decided to match it with a peach lip - great for some of Sara’s spring/summer looks, yet a difficult one to pull off. I look terrible with a peach lip, but Jade looked great. I then changed this lip to more of an orange and then finally a zesty warm red.
Ashley at Greg Malloy Hairdressing was there to do the models hair, I loved how passionate and hands on she was.
Camilla Lucinda was there to take the photos, so I instantly knew they would turn out amazing. Camilla specialises in weddings so take a look at her work on her website.
The location was The Forest Side Hotel in Grasmere. This was my first time there and it was breath-taking. Such a grand venue with stunning views, yet very modern. Each room had its own unique style and the staff were very friendly.
It was such a fun day and a pleasure to be part of.
